Tape it up so that it holds the correct form for each tentacle. To make the tentacles, take scrap paper and twist and crumple it up into the general shape you want. I also ended up chopping off some of the end of the head to make it a slightly different shape. NOTE: In the end, I never did the light-up head idea, so if I were to re-do this project I’d probably just form the body shape out of crumpled up paper and tape, like I do with the tentacles. So I found some scrap wire in my craft drawer, and sorta looped it around to make the general shape of the bottom of the octopus, covered it in tape, then paper mached the whole thing. So I figured the body base and the head had to be hollow. When I was first starting out, my intention was for the octopus head to be able to have a light on the inside so that it sorta glowed through it’s head. But someone on Pinterest credited a Tasha Vasilek with it, so I’m going to do that too and hope I’m right. It was really hard to figure out how to credit this artist, as I could only ever find the image by itself, not set into some other page with description. NOTE: Again, the picture below is NOT my finished octopus (I wish), it’s a professional sculpture. Very advanced, but it was a good shape to start with. I started searching around the internet for good octopus sculptures to base this off of (you can see some of my attempts in my Halloween Craft DIY Pinterest board here), and finally found the one you see below, made by a proper artist person out of who knows what. How to Make an Octopus out of Paper MacheĪt first I had a bit of an interesting time figuring out how to make an octopus out of paper mache, as it’s a bit more of a complicated shape than I’d imagined in my mind, and from how I drew it. For some reason I decided that an octopus craft was in order-a creepy, albino, paper mache octopus, to be exact. I’m going to show you how to make this craft at home below. As a notorious Halloween craft junkie, I’m always looking for new things to make to decorate my house with, come October. You just want to thin it a bit, not dilute it completely.Īre you ready to try a Mod Podge paper mache project? It couldn’t be any easier. If it’s super duper thick, you can pour some into a separate container and add a touch of water. First I shake the bottle, then I wet the brush and dip it into the Podge (rather than just dipping a dry brush in). If your Mod Podge is thick, I do a few things. I highly recommend it for adult projects especially, if not for all of your projects. Plus you don’t have to worry about yellowing or crusting or falling apart like you do with the flour and water combo. The Podge can also be used to seal the paint on the newspaper (if you choose to paint). Well, the nice thing about using Mod Podge to make paper mache is that you can use it directly from the bottle. But why would you want to do that instead? So that you don’t have to mix the ingredients and deal with the chunky water. Well it’s not that they’ve changed that much, but I’m here to show you how to make Mod Podge paper mache. There was a lot of stirring a chunky liquid (because the flour never fully dissolved) and then slapping it onto newspaper. ![]() ![]() I don’t know if it’s an 80s thing or if kids are still doing it today, but there was a lot of paste making with flour and water. The concept guiding reductive spells is that by building the phrase shorter so would a suffering or disease little by little diminish. Abracadabra is labeled as a reductive spell, which suggests it would have been published out as a complete term on the initially line, then with just one letter missing on the next, then a different letter taken out on the pursuing line, and so forth. Its origins are contested as scholars posit that abracadabra emerged from Late Latin or Late Greek, reflecting the recitation of the original letters of the alphabet ( abecedary) some others hypothesize that it could linked to the Hebrew Ha brakha dabra, which interprets as, “The blessing has spoken.” We do understand it as a phrase normally intended to invoke magical energy. Probably just one of the oldest and most identified magical phrases, abracadabra has been all over because the next century BCE and has famously appeared in the Harry Potter series. When you’re prepared, you can show your information of magic words by using this small quiz! It originated with a Gnostic sect in Alexandria called the Basilidians and was probably based on Abrasax, the name of their supreme deity ( Abraxas in Latin sources).įans of the Harry Potter books will know the killing curse, Avada Kedavra, in which J K Rowling seems to have combined the supposed Aramaic source of abracadabra with the Latin cadaver, a dead body.If you’re a genuine “wiz” at card tricks or have a deeper fascination with charms and spells, you might previously know the terms on this checklist. It’s from the Chaldean abbada ke dabra, meaning “perish like the word”.The source is three Hebrew words, ab (father), ben (son), and ruach acadosch (holy spirit). It’s from the Aramaic phrase avra kehdabra, meaning “I will create as I speak”.For what it’s worth, here are some theories: However, it seems likely that abracadabra is older and that it derives from one of the Semitic languages, though nobody can say for sure, because there is no written record before Serenus Sammonicus. Serenus Sammonicus said that to get well a sick person should wear an amulet around the neck, a piece of parchment inscribed with a triangular formula derived from the word, which acts like a funnel to drive the sickness out of the body: It’s believed to have come into English via French and Latin from a Greek word abrasadabra (the change from s to c seems to have been through a confused transliteration of the Greek). What we know for sure is that it was first recorded in a Latin medical poem, De medicina praecepta, by the Roman physician Quintus Serenus Sammonicus in the second century AD. ![]() But the word is extremely ancient and originally was thought to be a powerful invocation with mystical powers. These days it’s just a joking conjuror’s incantation with no force behind it, like hocus pocus and other meaningless phrases. It seems the origin isn’t known for certain. Q From Speranza Spiratos: Can you shed some magical clarity on the word abracadabra please?Ī Let me wave my wand. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you haven’t played the game yet, we won’t be going in-depth on any spoilers. And considering the Switch version goes for $30 over the original version’s price tag of $0… yikes. New developer Nicalis has added a ton of features to Cave Story over time, such as two-player, updated graphics, different versions of the soundtrack… but none of it’s really necessary, you know? It’s a bunch of fluff added to a game that ultimately only lasts a few hours. The original PC release was as ambitious as it needed to get. To clarify, I think Cave Story is a great game. Good grief! You might’ve noticed, but between the DSiWare version, the 3DS eShop version, and Cave Story 3D (which we may talk about in the future), players had three different versions of Cave Story available to them if they owned a 3DS. ![]() Let’s take a quick moment to list all of the versions of Cave Story: aside from the PC original, we have DSiWare, WiiWare, 3DS eShop, a 3D remaster also on the 3DS, a Steam port, and now a Switch port. In 2010, a (significantly larger) independent developer called Nicalis obtained the rights to Cave Story and ported the game to several consoles. You get to play it for free, right? Well, not anymore. And you also need to make money, which is a logical reason to make a game.Ĭave Story should be famous for being a really generous product. Of course, these days you need a team to develop a game in a good amount of time. So much of Cave Story’s history couldn’t happen today, and understandably so. Released for free despite taking years to develop? Check! And so on and so forth. An original and surprisingly complex storyline? Check. Developed from the ground up by one programmer? Check. The original Cave Story release was truly commendable. Though I’ve played four or five different versions of Cave Story, we’ll be specifically reviewing the Nintendo Switch version, Cave Story+. This game’s got a big history, and we’re going to take a look at all of it today. You could say Cave Story set the standard for indie games, and you’d be absolutely correct. It was released to the public for free in December 2004, and was developed in its entirety by just one person. Even here on our own site! But as far as indie games go, Cave Story is most certainly a classic. For the fast kill, switch to blade 2 and face away when in his eye so you can unload curly's level 1 nemesis into him at blade 2 speed.“Classic.” That’s a word that’s thrown around a lot these days. If you don't, level 3 blade on the spinning platforms will take him out fairly quickly too. You'll need 23 hp for Ballos' final form to do the fast kill strats. For Ballos 1st form, use blade two and shoot straight up and dodge him the size of the blade can still hit him and it makes for a quick nodamage 1st form I use level 2 blade for heavy press but level 1 spur spamming might be faster or nemesis if you can dodge the exp well. Always be boosting and close to the ground! Especially during the falling block room as you then have more reaction time too You can get away with not using this strategy at the end before Heavy press, but I'd recommend trying to learn it. Level 3 spur (not maxed) and level 1 nemesis can shoot through unactivated deletes if you are pressed up right against them. The falling block room is pretty RNG heavy, but keep practicing and any run with 35hp+ should be solid enough to pull off the S rank if the rest is executed well. Finally managed to get this! Video of strategy included at the bottom of the solution. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wonder Aleworks, a relative newcomer, is doing everything right under the vision of founder Nick Fischella, who helped make Banger Brewing one of the top breweries in Las Vegas. The level design notes during the development of this game likely consisted of “add more poop to” and “where’s the vomit?” Which I, as a fan of easy games that push experience over mechanics, am okay with. Those first images you conjured, perhaps Ren’s diseased teeth or Isaac fighting sentient feces. What do I mean by that? Well, think of Ren & Stimpy.
